Top Dishwasher Care Tips to Remember

Your dishwasher is one of the most useful machines you have at home, but like any other machine, it isn't invincible. In fact, it requires some tender loving care from time to time, if only to keep it in tip-top shape and make it last a long time. Just because it cleans your dining ware and kitchen utensils doesn't mean it will clean or maintain itself.

Here are basic tips to help you extend your dishwasher's lifespan:

1. Wash it.

You can wash the outside of your dishwasher using a soapy solution, or if it's made of stainless steel, a stainless steel solution. You can also run it to clean the inside, but if you think it needs a bit of extra help, run a cycle with some dishwasher cleaner.

2. Maintain cleanliness of the rubber seal.

Dishwasher doors normally have rubber seals around them, which are always exposed to moisture and heat. Over time, mold, mildew and household dirt can accumulate on them, so make it a point to clean your dishwasher's rubber seal regularly with soap and water. This is very important in ensuring that the plates, glasses, and everything you put in the dishwasher are actually clean instead of just clean-looking. 3. Clean the food disposal or filter regularly.

A lot of dishwashers come with food disposals. If there's one in yours, check the manual for regular care and maintenance procedures. Also, if you find a filter at the bottom of your dishwasher (common with newer models), make sure it's regularly cleaned as well. The manual will also teach you how. The filter's job is to catch food and other particulates, protecting the motor and other delicate parts of the machine. Not cleaning it regularly can be a source of health issues.

4. Remove the rust.

Household rust removers are sold in most supermarkets or hardware stores today. Any one of them can remove rust stains from your hard water detergent.

5. Check spray arm nozzles for clogs.

Sometimes, your dishwasher's spray arm nozzles get clogged with constant use. Anything could be a cause, from food bits to mineral deposits building up from hard water. Unclogging these holes can be as easy as sticking a toothpick into them from time to time. Hard water detergentwill ensure that your dishwasher continues to run efficiently.

6. Read manufacturer's instructions.

Finally, always remember that each dishwasher is unique. To handle yours properly, read your manual and follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
